Background
Essential Science Indicators is a basic scientific research performance analysis and evaluation tool to measure research efficiency and track scientific development trend launched in 2001 by the scientific and technological information (ISI) in United States. It is a quantitative analysis database based on a collection of more than 10,000,000 literature records from more than 11000 academic journals around the world ,which cited by Science Citation Index of ISI(SCI) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). ESI helps users understand the ranking within a certain range of scientists, research institutions (universities), countries (cities) and the development of academic journals in the field of a subject and its influence by a statistical analysis and sorting of states, research institutions, journals, papers and scientists in agronomy, biology, chemistry and other 22 areas respectively.ESI can also analyze research performance of research institutions, countries, companies and academic periodicals, measure research output and influence of specific areas, evaluate potential partners, critics, peers, and employees, track the development trend of research in the field of natural science and social science.ESI is commonly applied in today's world for evaluation of colleges and universities, academic institutions, national/regional international academic level and influence.
The top 1% global disciplines according to ESI, referring to the total cited frequency and ranking of scientific papers in a discipline published in the past 10 years is top 1% of a research institution (included in the Web of Science to the Article and Review), meaning this discipline of the agency ranks the top 1%ESI global disciplines.
